Hair Care Tips For Hijabis

Sisters, let’s talk. Hair care tips for hijabis is the topic of the day.

For many, wearing a hijab sounds so simple. You don’t have to wake up and do your hair for school or work every day and you most certainly do not have to worry about your double chin making an appearance.

However, wearing a hijab comes with it’s own set of obstacles! From baby hairs making an appearance every second to your scarf slipping around as if it has a mind of its own.

As someone who has suffered every problem under the sun in relation to wearing hijab I have decided to put together a list of things you can do to reduce the risk of fly away scarfs to hair loss!

One of the most important tips to give to my fellow hijabis is tie your hair properly when you wear your hijab. If you tie your hair too tightly, it will lead to hair breakage and even hair loss – leaving you with bald patches! Yikes!

So, to prevent this, skip tying your hair altogether and opt for an under-cap. This will help keep your hair together in one place. Wearing an under-cap will also stop your baby hairs coming out and will decrease the amount of breakage .

When searching for the perfect scarf or under-cap, ensure that the material is not only comfortable but also weather appropriate.

If you live in a country that is always hot, a more breathable lightweight material will be better suited to you. But if you live in a country that is always cold, maybe try pashmina, cotton, chiffon and shawl-like materials.

This might be an obvious one to some, but I need to stress the importance of washing your under-caps and scarves.

When wearing our hijabs for hours on end, they can then get a build-up of oil and sweat. Now, even if you wash your hair the next day, that oil and sweat is still sitting on your hijab and will accumulate over time – causing irritation to your scalp.

To prevent hair damage, being consistent with a hair care routine is important. Therefore, you need to know your hair type and which products work well for you. If you have a dry scalp, it would be helpful to oil your hair. Whereas if you have an oily scalp, it would be a good idea to wash your hair more often since you risk hair follicles being clogged with oil, leading to hair loss.

Make sure that you let your hair down when you aren’t wearing a hijab. When you get home, just as you would take your shoes off as soon as you get through the door, do the same with your hijab. It is so important to let your hair breathe.
