5 Top Tips For Breastfeeding by Gillian

Natural but not always straightforward!

Here are 5 tips you need to know about breastfeeding

There are no disputes that breastfeeding can enhance the health of babies and their mothers. Despite the evidence of its health-enhancing properties, many women often choose not to breastfeed or curtail the activity after a relatively short time. Many new mothers do not find breastfeeding straightforward and may not receive the appropriate support to sustain their breastfeeding journey.

Mothers can be faced with many problems while breastfeeding. For example, latching, correct positioning of baby, accessing professional support, unsupportive spouse, painful breasts, and leaky boobs! However, with the proper help and advice, a positive breastfeeding experience builds a strong emotional bond between you and your baby. Here are some breastfeeding tips from a breastfeeding mum to encourage and help you to get started on your journey.

1. Latching the baby to the nipple

You need to understand that not all newborn babies can latch to the nipple after delivery. It takes practice from baby and patience from mummy. Most importantly, before feeding your baby, make sure you are comfortable. You may need pillows to elevate the baby to nipple height. Guide baby into place and when the baby is correctly latched and suckling; you will feel the baby form a pattern of sucking and swallowing.

2. Correct positioning of the baby

There are various ways you can hold your baby during breastfeeding; laid-back breastfeeding, cradle, crossover, football-hold, or side-lying position. There are lots of information online on how to use these techniques when feeding your baby.

3. Getting enough rest

You also need to make sure that you are well rested, eating nutritious meals and drinks, which is most especially important when breastfeeding so that your infant receives the benefit of these nourishing foods.

4. Breastfeeding should NOT be painful

Breastfeeding mothers can develop a breast infection called Mastitis, which means your breast becomes swollen, hot, and painful. Please seek urgent medical advice if this happens.

5. Breast pads become your best friend

Leaky boobs are preventable by using breast pads. These are readily available at any supermarket.
